Description The “Non-Eucharistic” Mantle: Unlike the chasuble, which is reserved strictly for the celebration of Mass, the cope is used for almost all other solemn liturgical functions. Wider Liturgical Application: It is the standard vestment for the celebrant during processions, solemn blessings (such as the blessing of ashes or palms), burials, and the solemn celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. Symbol of Office: The cope can be worn by bishops, priests, and deacons when they preside over sacramental celebrations outside of Mass, such as baptisms and weddings. Historical Evolution: Originally derived from a secular raincoat (pluviale), its ornamental hood (the “shield”) is a vestige of its practical origin as protection against elements during outdoor processions.
